Been out of town since Monday and just waded through enough posts to make an astronaut dizzy. It looks like the charitable notions of the EU with regard to banana design has raised the ire of the US and now the farmers of the EU may lose some of their American market. It needs to be stated that this matter has been under appeal by the banana vendors from the Americas for at least the past 6 years. It a good thing that the technology that goes into a good banana hasn't changed or else even if the EU relents these growers would be left in the dust. The companion to that notice was the letter from our state department signed by the Secretary of State protesting the EU 3G standard. Perhaps the banana volley was just a notice that the US means business when it comes to free trade and that we will look unkindly at and even act against non tariff (or tariff) barriers, especially if they are in contravention of WTO rules. In spite of Maurice's militaristic characterization of a "big stick" policy, I don't think we would start launching cruise missiles at EU cell sites in retaliation (at $1,000,000 per missile, the cost would be too great), but the message on the banana page is clear that appropriate trade restriction might be undertaken. Hopefully, in the spirit of the Holidays, all parties will come to the table refreshed and an agreement will be reached. The combination of a lock on the IPR, the backing of the US gov't as well as the technological lead is a strong negotiating position for the Q. "When you've got them by the b***s, their hearts and minds will follow." Happy Holidays and profitable investing to ALL!
