It seems like the natural chain of events will be something like this:
1. cleaner ICE's on petroleum like natural gas-this is the alternative fuels solution and is interim until the hybrid FC car.
Time frame--fazing in now. Will be a solution for4-8 years.

2. The hybrid, FC with reformer.
Time frame--Starts to appear in 2-3 years. Expect buses and trucks first followed quickly by autos. Strong growth in 5 years, displacing the alternative fueled vehicles over 10 years.

3.Pure hydrogen and water based FC.
Time frame--faze in starts in 6-8 years. Hydrogen infrastructure, safety, training, etc. will take time as well as development.
Just a lot IMHO as to what it might take. Guesswork for sure but it is a pretty sure bet that all of the types mentioned will be on the highways at the same time through some time period.

The schedule will be blind sided by events-- international events, war, design by computer speeds development undeterminable amounts, the world economy, etc.. So don't hold my feet to the fire down the road.

Suffice to say-we enter an exceedingly interesting and exciting era. The 21st century!! WOW!

There is only a finite amount of water on this planet. In some areas
fresh water is in short supply even if there is ocean water near by.
Depleting the supply of ocean salt water in the long run will cause
the salt level to rise, killing all ocean based water life/plant life and ocean side plant life and then human race. See the Dead Sea as
an example.

There is truth in what you say, but the only water that will be curtailed will be fresh water. There are ample oceans on this planet to provide hydrogen until our sun goes super-nova.
