There is little improvement going from L3=1M to 2M. Most MB comes with 512K or 1M L2 (which will become L3 in K6-3 systems). The strength of the K6-3 is in the integrated 256K L2.

K6-3-350 (512K L3)= 27.2
Pentium II 400 = 27.6
K6-3-350 (1M L3)= 28.0
K6-3-350 (2M L3)= 28.9
Pentium II 450 = 29.5
CeleronA 450= 29.5
K6-3-400 (1M L3/ 66MHz FSB) = 29.9

When AMD releases the K6-3 it will be the fastest period. It will also be cheaper than the PII. Look like Sharpteeth are out to bite PII.

Guess what, Paul? WITHOUT IT'S L2 CACHE, THE PENTIUM II IS JUST A BRAIN DEAD CELERY!

I challenge you to find a Super 7 board with no L2 cache SRAMS. They don't exist. Anand's L3-less tests are irrelevant.

Paul, most super 7 boards have 1 meg of cache. Even with 512k of cache, Anand's tests show the K6-3 is a compelling upgrade path (as opposed to throwing away your CPU, mobo, etc, and buying Intel stuff). Anand says so: "however as the test results show, older motherboards with 512KB of cache and those that operate only at the 66MHz FSB will be fine with the K6-3 as an upgrade path for the future."

Or, if you want a system that outpeforms the best that Intel can offer, a K6-3 with 2(or more?) MB of L2 cache is much cheaper than a PII-450.

I guess half-speed L2 provided by Intel on the PII is a stacked deck, too. Was Anand's motherboard provided by AMD? I doubt it. Quite a few super-7 mobos nowadays have 2 MB L2.

Are we reading the same article?

A K6-3 400 MHz with ZERO L3 and a 66 (!) MHz FSB still beats a PII-400 in Winstone 98. For that matter, a K6-3 350 MHz with 1 MB L3 (which is what most Super 7 boards have featured) also beats the PII-400 under Winstone 98.
