Barry - Re: "Do you recall what they paid for these shares? Not very
much, I suspect."

Intel announced their investment in Inktomi on October 8, 1997 - Inktomi went public in around June, 1998.

Typically, Intel inevests 1 or 2 million in these startups and my GUESS (a wild one) is that Intel bought shares in the $5 to $10 range - as Inktomi was still PRIVATE at the time of the investment.

Under these assumptions, we can bracket Intel's shares at 127,000 (what they just sold) to 400,000 at the high end, less 127,000.

This investment is only one of MANY that Intel has - making a "Hidden" value asset of sizeable proportions.

These include Citrix systems (4% ~ worth $150,000,000), VeriSign (6% ~ $98,000,000 ), USWeb (~ $27,000,000), and CMGI (4.9% ~ $139,000,000),
Rambus (??) and Broadcom among many, many others.

Not a bad War Chest to have ! Probably worth a couple of Billion $ or more today.

Note that Kurlak didn't mention this "value" aspect of Intel !!!

Paul
