twister,

As far as discovering and tracking spin-offs, etc., I use news alert - newsalert.com - to watch for upcoming spin-offs and other special situations. You can register for free and set-up two predefined "topics" - e.g. patterns used to filter "all" news items.

I set up my first topic, called "Spin-offs", with the query string of:

spinoff or spin-off or "spin off"

I set up the second topic to, called "Special Situations", with the query string of:

((emerg*) and (bankruptcy or "chapter 11")) or "rights offering" or "contingent value" or recapitalization

It still takes some sifting - I look at the news a few times a week.

Once a stock of interest is discovered, I add the stock to a portfolio on Yahoo! - I keep separate portfolios for spin-offs, bankruptcies, recaps. That makes the news on spin-offs and parents relatively easy to follow, even after they've been separated.
