Your example would increase the tax basis of those shares (sorry I misunderstood the first time I read it) and would also reset the long-term acquisition date. Most people would NOT want to reset the acquisition date, making the position taxable as a short-term gain for the next 12 months, rather than being long-term sooner than that.
