<< More than 17 centuries after the Romans attempted to establish one currency for all of Europe, 11 European nations are poised to try once again in a momentous leap of faith that monetary union will transform the continent into an economic superpower.

On New Year's Day, Germany, France, Italy and eight other countries will begin merging their currencies into a new money called the euro. The merger won't mean the end of marks, francs, lire and the other national currencies until 2002, when euro coins and bank notes make their debut.
