The Inside Scoop

By James K. Glassman

Sunday, December 27, 1998; Page H01

The market has risen this year against a backdrop of disappointing earnings.
But there are exceptions, and Salomon Smith Barney pointed some out to
clients in a recent advisory: 43 companies that the firm believes "have the
potential for outperformance in the coming year," in part because earnings
have been beating estimates lately.

Consider these selections in building a more stable foundation for your
portfolio: Compaq Computer Corp. (CPigQ), Warner-Lambert Co. (WLA), First
Union Corp. (FTU), Home Depot Inc. (HD), Pitney Bowes Inc. (PBI),
McDonald's Corp. (MCD), Duke Energy Corp. (DUK), Nike Inc. (NKE), EMC
Corp. (EMC), Hewlett-Packard Co. (HWP), Fannie Mae (FNM) and Eastman
Kodak Co. (EK).
