Ah, yes, they do grow up so fast! My little one, who is now fifteen, wants to dye her hair, have her belly button pierced, get a lavender rose tattooed on her shoulder, wear false fingernails, and stick four earrings in each ear. Since these are all things that I think either makes young teenagers look kind of cheap, or, in the case of the tattoo, are pretty permanent, she is going to have to wait until she is eighteen before she does them. She remarked the other day that she is going to be very, very busy on her eighteenth birthday! At the same time, she wanted a purple TeleTubby for Christmas, which she cuddles when she naps. I think every age of childhood is a combination of baby and big person all mixed up, and one of the things I have done to honor childhood in my own household is to make sure my daughter feels as safe regressing as plunging ahead. Life IS good here. I think we are taking a family trip to Ireland sometime this year. It is my instinct to organize my life, and in that spirit I went to a store today called Hold Everything, bought two huge plastic boxes designed to hold hundreds of Christmas ornaments, and came home extremely pleased with myself. Then I glanced at the computer, and now the boxes are just sitting in the bright winter sun next to the dried out tree, which I am afraid may burst into flames if I do not undress it and put it outside for recycling within the next couple of days. I am pleased that you have a job you enjoy. The fairies were gracious this year, and I also have a job that is not hard on my spirit, although my body does not seem to have the resiliency it once did. As I age, I am more and more struck by that old saying, "Youth is wasted on the young." Now that I am older but wiser I tire more easily, too. I guess it is only a matter of time before Jonny is walking and jumping and testing all the limits of gravity and parental patience. Best wishes to you and all your various boulders, rocks and river pebbles this year!
