Well, AT, as you know, I'm the klutz who thought he was covering a short (which hadn't gone thru) in NSOL at 113 15/16 and was astounded to discover he was actually long at that price. And to make matters worse, that same klutz sold the position the next day at 118 3/8.

A number of minor trading errors here -

1. when checking your confirms of short sales, make sure you don't overlook the possibility it may actually read "nothing done."

2. don't sell a stock at 118 when it's going to hit 165 three days later.

So perhaps I'm not sufficiently deft to act as anything but a contrary indicator in this contest.<GGG>

Maybe UBID on Thursday was a harbinger, but I wouldn't bet on it yet. I just hope that when it does happen it just takes the play-money, and doesn't bring the rest of the market with it. I still haven't sold my house in California and I need guys from San Jose who feel rich with options.

I'm sure others have thought of this, but perhaps a catalyst for the puncturing of the internet bubble may be a sort of reverse tax selling - investors who didn't want to bloat their 1998 tax bill but want to protect gains may be tempted to sell in the New Year.

What is the rule? Date of sale or settlement date is the effective date for tax purposes?

QWST - hope it goes. bought some on Thursday.
