Some of my cousins considered both propane and kerosene heaters [in preparation for Y2K]. Both decided against either and both opted to put coal stoves in their basements. They though this a better option than getting woodstoves, including going through less coal (quantity) in a winter than wood. Living in a medium sized city, both were concerned about having people steal their wood. My story of two years ago when I got carpenter ants inside my house thanks to a back-up supply I kept inside turned them off from the idea of filling their basements with wood.

P.S. It was sheer H--- getting rid of those carpenter ants.
