How can you tell that a major marketing effort has not been undertaken by MSFT for its Sql 7.0? I guess you can make some sort guess, if you work in the industry.

I think the success of Dell against Sun largely hinges on Sql server 7.0.
That might be true for low end SUN server products, or workstations used as servers, but there are no DELL hardware platforms which would allow DELL to compete against SUN's high end products, no matter what software they are running.

BTW SQL 7 has been getting its butt kicked by Oracle 8 even in small configurations. MSFT needs to do more to get to a competitive DB offering for the high end.
