Richie -
The plans for the storage initiative were well advanced at both DEC and CPQ before the merger, targeting '99. Much of the work in 2H98 was to get the product offerings combined and develop a solid distribution plan. I expect to see these offerings in early '99, adding to the StorageWorks line as well as CPQ's other enterprise lines. Storage could be a $10B business all by itself within a year, if present trends continue. I expect CPQ to kick EMC's butt in the high end multivendor space - they have better offerings and a much better integration capability.

RE: StorageWorks: "How fast can they bring these products to market..."

Hi Richie,

As Rudedog said, initial development on thses type of products happened before the merger and are currently being consolidated for launch/availability next year. I think this is really exciting stuff. All I am hearing from my customers lately is the need for a consolidated Enterprise Backup and Storage solution.

You have probably seen this, it is on the Compaq site: compaq.com

when can we expect to see the fruits of their labor? 99?

There should be a big push for server-independent storage starting immediately, I expect a big push in 1Q99. The StorageWorks team had a number of products on the launch pad prior to the merger, and they were mostly reworking those products to integrate them fully with the CPQ technology to assure compatibility across products, and add details like CPQ's pre-failure warranty, which requires agents which monitor disk health on-line to predict a drive failure before the drive actually fails.

Remember that it takes at least a year, sometimes longer, to get a patent through the mill, so usually the patent announcements come out at the same time or sometimes even after announcement of product containing the technology.
