Chicki, the museum in Holland is being remodeled, and seventy (yep, 70) Van Gogh's are in the U.S., as I would kinda confidently guess you know. MJ and I and my cousin Dash are booked on the plane, for precisely the reasons you enthuse.

I am looking forward to one of the ultimate experiences of my life.

Which, is kind of fun.

:o)

Kinda rough on old Salvadore, aren't you? There are a couple of his better ones at the National Gallery, I think he's pretty good. Not as good as Da Vinci, and I also prefer Van Gogh, but "blow chunks" is not what I'd say. Anyway, if I were chosing the Pantheon, number one would be Vermeer, number two would be Giotto, and number three would be Michelangelo. But I still love Redon and Rousseau and Picasso and on and on and on. Agree that they don't reproduce well on the 'Net, but they don't reproduce so well in books, either.

TLC,
Not short of opinions are we??? I like Dali because it is rumored that in his less sane days he would crawl around the floor saying "soy un caracol". Translated: "I am a snail".

I was at the Bellagio in Las Vegas last month and was dismayed at the setting that the collection was in. Cramped, poorly lit, crowded, low ceiling, paintings withing 3 feet of each other. I was pissed. Some beautiful pieces though. Two Van Goghs, Jackson Pollack "Frieze", Miro "Dialogue of Insects". But there was also some crap amongst the diamonds.

And I have seen many Dalis up close and personal and I like 'em!

JXM

There is a problem with art on the net, and I have dealt with problems of any reproduction of my work - which is vitreous enamels, glass fired onto copper and silver. I work with transparent enamels almost exclusively. The metal is polished before the glass is fired onto it. Part of the joy in looking at the work is seeing the clarity and depth of color and enjoying the change in shades of color as the piece is manipulated in the light. There is absolutely no way to convey this aspect when a work is photographed or scanned to be put on the net.

However, I have found that I can at least convey some idea of what I do by scanning my enamels and putting the results on my website. And people who know my work know its quality and know that they are looking at a reproduction that cannot convey the piece exactly.

The site is at: enamelist.com

One interesting and unexpected result: I had a card printed to announce the site. The designer used the scanned images and sent that information to the printer. The results were amazingly good - better than a slide because the information was more accurate than anything I have had done by photographers over the years.
