scan, sorry for my tardiness, I have been trading the 2nd and 3rd highflying net stocks furiously in the last few days. Now I can sit down and take some time to examine the chronology of events in Tom Pope's 2 minute ARCA market order. <<1. Why were the first two attempts made to market makers, when apparently the Island ECN was consistently there with the market makers when each initial attempt to market maker 1 and market maker 2 was made?>> According to Tom, when he placed the order, the inside bid was 24 7/8. I have trouble understanding why ARCA preferenced ROCK with 25 instead of 24 7/8. Moreover, as you said, ISLD is much faster than SNET preference so it would make sense to scan the ISLD book first. In fact, I would scan the ISLD, REDIPlus and Brass books (prior to preference any mms on the inside) first since they are all very speedy ECNs. INCA is usually much slower but ARCA can still scan it and see if there is a match. As well, it may not be a bad idea to scan BTRD, ATTN and STRIKE, either. 2. The 7/8th fill at Redi should not have been a surprise because the stock than printed 25. One question, is why was the limit ever raised? Why did it not stay at 3/4 where it was at the last market maker? Didn't Island still have size at 3/4? Looks like a programming oversight with ARCA. I would like to think that ARCA was able to scan REDI and raised the limit to hit the bid at 7/8, hoping that the Reserve size at 7/8 was more than 300. But it certainly should have lower the limit back to 3/4 the moment REDI ECN said "300 at 7/8, no reserve." 3. Yes, ARCA appears an antiquated system, judging from what happened in this transaction. My feeling is that it should be able to quickly scan fast ECNs like ISLD, REDI, BRUT every 5 or 10 seconds, even when the order is being held up by a preferenced MM in the last 20 seconds, just so it would be prepared to hit the proper ECN the moment the MM rejects the preference. Will look at it again some other times. Thanks for your thoughtful and thought provoking posts. Kimberly
