Was your friends mother near the East Coast? There is a strain of normally harmless bacteria that live in brackish water. When they get a large dose of nitrates, say from a chicken or hog operation run off, they turn into flesh eaters. People, fish, birds, doesn't matter, they eat all flesh. Cut off the nitrates and they become harmless again. Like sobering up a mean drunk.
