Keep an eye on e-commerce stocks after positive reports on prospects for next year. Asia was mixed and Europe gained. The Dow is set to open flat.

U.S.

It is already a bang-up year for e-tailing in 1998. And it was a very green Christmas for many merchants, with sales up 230 percent to $2.3 billion from last year, according to market research firm Boston Consulting Group.

For the year, Jupiter Communications expects $5.7 billion in sales, while Boston Consulting was more optimistic, looking for $13 billion for 1998.

While its too early to tell who the long-term winners in e-tailing will be, a good water mark is how well merchants can handle the deluge of people shopping online. Some sites have buckled under the strain of hordes of people popping online to finish shopping.
