We're not in disagreement.

People who do manual labor are most disadvantaged by raising the retirement age as they are doing. It's more difficult for them to work later in their years.

Perhaps the Depression and the crash in the financial system had something to do with insurance companies not being able to meet obligations. It was originally a tax of only 2% of income.

I disagree. SS is a welfare system designed to look like an insurance program. People at the top are taxed much more than they would ever hope to receive from the program. If it is really an insurance program, why not give people the option to opt out of it? If it were really an insurance program, such an option would make sense. But it really is a welfare system, and as such it attempts to re-distribute income. Therefore you can't allow people to opt out because those from whom income is being redistributed would obviously choose to opt out, thus making the welfare program no longer work.
