I wonder how many of those shorts have covered so far and where the "pain threshold" is before more of them throw in the towel, 45.00? 47.00? About 4 million of these shares were sold in the last 60 to 75 days; about 8 million were sold since the I-Mac release last August. Assuming the majority of the recent stock rise is due to short covering and the pre-earnings buying is just now beginning, then in my opinion, the real excitement is still ahead. Just picked this up from CBS market watch (Salomon says AAPL may have another 20% to 25% upside over next 12 mo.):

Computer makers advanced after Apple (AAPL)
jumped 1 7/16 to 40 11/16 on the continued
success of its iMac personal computer.

"I think (Apple) has another 20 to 25 percent
upside over the next 12 months," said Richard
Gardner, computer analyst for Salomon Smith
Barney.
