Keep an eye on SHRP By Lisa J Ulmer, CBS MarketWatch Last Update: 1:28 PM ET Dec 23, 1998NewsWatch SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Sharper Image Corp. shares soared 26 percent Wednesday after the retailer of innovative and entertainment-value products said its December Internet sales increased six fold. The company (SHRP) also said its comparable store sales gained 9 percent and mail order sales jumped 27 percent. The retailer saw shares jump 3 1/4 to 16 1/8 after it reported December sales on its Web site, www.sharperimage.com, rocketed 492 percent, topping the 436 percent take-off in November. "As consumers get even more comfortable with online shopping, I expect Internet sales at our sharperimage.com Web site will continue to increase," said Sharper Image's chief executive Richard Thalheimer in a press release. Thalheimer added, "The improvement in gross margin and the increased sales in the all important December month will significantly impact this year's earnings."
