Rubin sees positive developments in world economy

WASHINGTON, Dec 28 (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin said Monday the world economy has made positive steps in recent months, but that much work lies ahead to move beyond the economic crisis that swept the globe this year.

Speaking on CNN's ''Inside Politics'' program, Rubin said: ''It will take time for the world to work its way through these problems.''

''There have been a lot of positive developments, particularly in the last few months, but there is an enormous amount of work to do and I think there are still great difficulties we need to work our way through over time.''

Regarding the U.S. economy, Rubin repeated his oft-stated forecast that the most likely scenario is continued solid growth and low inflation.

''The most likely scenario is the continuation of solid growth and low inflation, subject to the normal ups and downs and subject particularly to the risks of the global economy,'' Rubin told CNN.

When asked whether his resignation was a possibility, as has long been rumored, Rubin said he was focused on the national issues at hand.

''My mind is on the issues that we face ... and that's what I'm focusing on and that's where my head is right now.''
