I noticed that the market capitalization for Sybase is only 550 million-- pocket change for MSFT. The question is what are they planning:

Options are

a)they are worried about DOJ if they go after a Sybase or Informix and are forced to develop internally
b)they are developing internally and don't need Sybase or Informix
c)they plan to buy a Sybase or Informix
d)they don't want to get into the high end business because it won't be very profitable -- not worth their while
e)they don't want to piss any of their current partners who are buyers of SQL 7.0 (I actually think they will be quite happy with such a move)
f)they don't want to branch out too much -- which could result in breakup of the company
g)maybe they want to branch out into everything that can be profitable and eventually want a break up of the company -- shareholders win big at that time (hopefully years down the road)

My guess is (b) with a chance of (a) or (c)--and a tiny chance of (g)

I think MSFT's philosophy is to go into some business in a big way or don't bother at all. Since they have started SQL Server -- IMHO, they will continue until they get a dominant market share.
