With my broker (Montgomery), I ask for a locate of the shares at the beginning. Then, those shares are mine to short for the entire day.

Also, you might consider shorting a large position (ie. 10,000 shares) right away, and then buying long a portion (ie. 5,000) and boxing part of the short shares. Then you can sell the long portion later to increase your short, or unbox the position to stay with your initial short position (ie, 5,000).
