A followup with Vern Now, now fellow diplomats, cut Vern some slack. Playing stupid, I replied: "Thanks so much for the reply. I'm curious as to why you think Wave is the STB technology for copy protection? It is my understanding that they are going after the PC market not the STB market. Their focus is to be the "killer app" for controlling the outright purchase and renting-to-own of digital content over the internet, CD-Rom, DVD and Broadband. This could be in the form of games, financial information, etc. They already have signed deals with SMSC to embed the technology on Super I/O and with ITE on ICs. It appears as if shipments will start this year on select OEM SKUs (NEC, IBM, etc)" Vern replied: "I suppose we are witnessing the embedding of STB technology into some PCs. I'm still skeptical unless this is part a Wintel-backed standard (isn't there a Future PC or something from WinHEC?). As far as a content wrapper as a "killer app:" that's definitely stretching a very special term. I think content wrapping will eventually become obsolete because the big media companies will screw it up, causing new distributors to crop up using unencrypted standards like MP3. If the guy is getting quoted in articles regarding e-commerce, it can't hurt to broaden his horizons a bit. ---Slate
