how the %$#@* does one get into BIOS to see what is installed where....

The instructions for entering the bios will flash by early in the boot sequence. It varies from bios to bios. It may say to enter setup hit F1, or del, or in the case of Adaptec SCSI bios "ctrl A".

My computer boots so fast I can not read the instructions any more. The power saving features cause the monitor to sequence through a low power mode during boot..exactly the time the instructions are presented. I just hit keep hitting "del" early in the sequence to enter the AMI bios on my machine.

If you have the mobo manual it should be indicated somewhere. It is probably the same for most Award bioses..all I have is AMI.

Aopen AX6b bios

If what you have is the same as the Aopen AX6b manual I have on my harddrive..hit "del" during POST when you see the prompt or just keep tapping "del" right after you turn the machine on.

>>sorry to start out with such a rudimentary question but..... how the %$#@* does one get into BIOS to see what is installed where....

In a sense it is rudimentary, in the sense of fundamental,
but there's nobody here who hasn't asked (screamed) that
question in essentially the same tones. This is a
"Where the hell are my bootstraps since I have to pull
myself up" question.

As other posters have noted, the by far most common is DEL
early in the POST sequence (before the drives are recognized,
usually). Much more rare but still common is F1. Other
sequences are more rare yet. The mobo manual *should* tell you.
Both AMI and AWARD bioses use DEL in my experience, and virtually
all recent ones.

I get NT to say its safe to shutdown but when I either press the power switch or use Orbits keyboard route just the monitor goes to sleep but BigBoy keeps on ticking.

Are you sure you want to turn your computer off? <g>

Orbit's procedure should work to completely power down/off Win98. You can not completely power off NT from the keyboard or with a mouse. You will have to use the switch (in your present case the wall plug) for the final move.

You have properly shut down NT (written appropriate files to the harddrive) when you see the safe to shut down NT screen.

How long did you wait after hitting the power off switch? If I have to power off my Aptiva (Win95) with the switch (ie computer is not responding to keyboard) I hit the power switch and nothing happens right away. About 20 seconds later the machine turns off. (I have been tempted to pull the plug to shut it off...I know that will work.)

I wonder if there is some type of power control setting in the bios?

EDIT..I see you answered that one already.
