Tero: Out of curiosity, what would a tri-mode phone cover? Analog, GSM and TDMA ? Or would CDMA be one of the "modes"? Also what would the CDMA dual mode cover, analog and CDMA? Chaz

All, Any idea why the $3 drop today?

Nokia seemed to drop more than a lot of the other tech stocks on a
percentage basis today...excluding the Internet Craze Stocks that is.

Any thoughts on the subject would be appreciated...

End of year house cleaning? Anticipation of good/bad news from Motorola on
Friday? Traders betting that most of the good news is behind us for awhile?
Anticipation of a weakening dollar?

Thanks in Advance....

Nokia and Ben Nederland sign GSM 1800 expansion deal - bringing enhanced data services

"The release below, but my comment first: Got to say that this is quite a significant order. The value is not bad for an 'expansion', when compared to other DCS/GSM 1800 orders. The other point is that it is in the heart of Europe. The other DCS/GSM contracts were mainly in Asia and built on existing infrastructure for GSM 900, therefore the total value tends to be lower. The order underlines the strength and many months advantage over their chief rivals in this particular market segment (DCS/GSM 1800)"

(January 4, 1999) - Nokia is to provide a GSM 1800 network expansion for Ben Nederland (formerly Proximus Nederland), a joint venture between Belgacom and Tele Danmark. The agreement, valued at over USD 100 million will enable the creation of a wide range of enhanced services for GSM subscribers in The Netherlands.

The launch of Ben Nederland's nationwide network is scheduled for February 1999. Nokia will supply mobile switching centres, home location registers, as well as a base stations, base station controllers and the Nokia NMS Network Management System. An extensive range of customer services will be provided, covering network planning, site acquisition, civil works, installation and commissioning of all network elements. Nokia will also maintain and support system operations, following the network's commercial launch.

In addition, Nokia will provide Ben Nederland with its Artus Messaging Platform, for the provision of Internet-based wireless data services. Nokia's Intelligent Network solution will also be implemented for the creation of further advanced GSM services. This network expansion strengthens Nokia's position as a leading GSM network supplier in The Netherlands.

Nokia offers total GSM systems, with everything from digital mobile phones to transmission and switching as well as extensive services and network management solutions for building, efficiently operating and developing these networks. Having supplied GSM technology to 78 operators in 37 countries, Nokia ranks as the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest in GSM 900.

Nokia is the world's leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile and fixed telecom networks including related customer services. Nokia also supplies solutions and products for fixed and wireless datacom, as well as multimedia terminals and computer monitors. In 1997, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion (USD 9.8 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on five European Stock Exchanges and on the New York Stock Exchange (NOK.A), has sales in 130 countries and employs more than 42,000 people world-wide.
