Loose Change

What do you call a saggy retail stock that starts a web
site, and suddenly becomes the next hot 'thang? A Cheap
Thrill Stock. And the next Cheap Thrill Stock may very
well be--Sunglass Hut. RAYS may be hopping online
pretty soon. And, if that's the case, it won't be a $6
stock much longer. Meanwhile, has anyone noticed CMGI,
the Internet venture capital fund? It's gone from below
$50 in October all the way up to $131 1/2.... Not
everyone can keep the Net juice flowing. Ziff-Davis $2
3/4 tumbled today, after Morgan Stanley downgraded it
to neutral. The stock had enjoyed a nice little rally
on plans to issue tracking stock of ZDNet, its online
business. But Morgan said: No go. Quelle damage!...
Everyone's been waxing poetic about the benefits of
online Christmas shopping. I'm not convinced. This year
I decided to put my money with Amazon. It's a tested
entity, has a good selection, and should be speedy,
right? Wrong! My gift failed to arrive before the 12/25
deadline. It was slightly embarrassing to give an IOU
to my stepmother.... Speaking of Europe (I wasn't
really, but whatever), has anyone caught CNBC's German
version of Maria Bartiromo? Sylvia Wadweh (I think
that's how you spell it). She's very funny. Check her
out tomorrow morning.... Nice job, Jets.... Serwer's
back Tuesday. Have a great New Year's, everyone. So
long!

Amazon WAS fun. BGP WILL BE fun. Borders has a successful retail model and makes a profit. Has a market cap of around 10% of amazon.
Lets figure this one out? As suggested at Yahoo site, Amazon can trade stock for stock for Borders(and a profit),while still being ahead of the game. My projection end of Jan. Amazon $125.,Borders $150.
I own them both by the way.

>These new users do have friends who shop at and trust Amazon,

Wrong. Any new users that are coming on the net now probably don't have net-veterans as friends. If your circle of friends is already on the net and shopping at Amazon, you are probably already on the net yourself.

Amazon had a head start, and they owned the market for a while, but competition is coming from all sides. Bezos has realized that selling books will never make a profit, and now he's branching out into other low-margin commodities. (cds, videos).

The people that are THIS LATE getting onto the net have regular non-net saavy friends. The first advertising they are going to see is from brick-and-mortar stores who can afford to advertise in local newspapers and who can stick signs all over their real world stores.

Amazon cannot afford a national advertising campaign- they have to avoid burning through what's left of their junk bond cash.

Amazon's only currency is it's stock- and somehow I suspect it's less than legal tender. :)

The Internet brings the world to your computer. Is Amazon.Com the best of the net? Does it offer the best prices? Best Service? A new upcomer in Canada, www.chaptersglobe.com has been on line for the past few months. They are building on their already solid reputation as a Book Supermarket (similar to Barnes and Nobles) in Canada. Today's Best Seller list on both websites show a big difference in price: Tom Wolfe - A Man in Full AMZN - 20.27 Chapters - 15.67 *
Tom Clancy - Rainbow Six AMZN - 19.57 Chapters - 15.29 *

Chapters is offering over a 20% savings over Amazon. They are currently profitable and the shares are trading at a level that offers high potential for a traditional and internet based stock.
