Flatlanders... Back when Columbus set off for the New World, a significant cadre of individuals believed the world to be flat. Despite all evidence to the contrary, and details such as the New World's physical existence and the voyager's safe return, these people continued with their outmoded beliefs. Fast forward to 1996. Back in 1996, despite countless CDMA trials, despite the deployment plans announced by Airtouch, Alltel, Ameritech, BellAtlantic, Centennial Cellular, GTE, PrimeCo, Sprint, U.S. West and others, certain constituencies continued to claim that CDMA would not work. Flatlanders. After the initial networks turned on, certain constituencies claimed that all was part of an orchestrated fraud to fool Wall Street and prop up Qualcomm's stock price. Flatlanders. Networks would collapse under load; near-far problems were close at hand; the handsets were too big; the capacity gains too small. Flatlanders. Fast forward to 1999. Reflecting back, it occurred to me that I was far too generous with my previous appellation. "Flatlanders" suggested a heartfelt, albeit ignorant, belief. Today, I can think of more descriptive terminology. The same constituencies that once predicted a CDMA apocalypse now claim to have invented the thing. Con merchants. Even their advocates note that deception was involved to protect the GSM installed base. Con merchants. TDMA-based GSM is still the best technology in the world, W-CDMA is.... Con merchants. W-CDMA provides a seamless upgrade path for GSM, cdma2000 does not. Why? Because we say so. Con merchants. W-CDMA isn't repackaged IS-95 and it doesn't involve QC IPR. Why? Because we say so. Con merchants. DoCoMo alters its standard, but this does not mean anything. Why? Because we say so. Con merchants. Qualcomm is on shaky ground. Why? Because we say so. Con merchants. Cheers everyone!
