RE VVTV News December 29, 1998 14:27 INTERVIEW-ValueVision sees profits in TV-Web link CHICAGO, Dec 29 (Reuters) - Direct marketing and home shopping company ValueVision International Inc. , whose stock value more than doubled on Tuesday, said it sees opportunities to profit from its expertise in selling products over the airwaves and the Internet. "In the future, we're going to spend a lot more time looking at the strategic opportunities between entertainment, the Internet and television," Gene McCaffery, chief executive of ValueVision, told Reuters in a telephone interview. The idea, McCaffery said, is to help companies cross-promote their products on the Internet and on cable television shows like ValueVision's home shopping program. "I think there is a big opportunity for companies to have affiliations with cable television," McCaffery said. Minneapolis-based ValueVision's shares more than doubled in value earlier Tuesday after the company said its pre-Christmas December sales from its television home shopping network rose 70 percent over the same period a year ago. ValueVision also said electronic commerce sales continue to increase at a far greater rate than television sales. The stock was up 4 at 10-1/2 during the afternoon after trading as high as 20-1/2, nearly triple its 52-week high of 7-1/2. Nearly 25 million shares had changed hands by midafternoon. ValueVision's past has been rocky at times, with losses in the last two quarters, but the company said last month it expected to return to profitability in the fourth quarter ending in January. Thomas Emmel, an analyst at John G. Kinnard & Co., credited the management team led by McCaffery, who was named chief executive officer in June, with getting the business back on track. "They have done a fantastic job of turning around their core business, which is home shopping," Emmel said. "They have really positioned the company to be a significant player in e-commerce, whether on the Internet or on television."
