Has anybody thought to check your local newspaper want ads for a similar slow down in activity over Christmas? It's been a pattern for 50 years. The drop in ads right before Christmas is made more dramatic by the typical rise in ads from Halloween forward - leading up to the shopping season.

>Ascribing the slowdown in eBay auction activity around the holiday season to "people spending time away from the site" makes sense to me.

How about all the people selling Beanies for XMAS? Doesn't it seem that this should stimulate demand and would be an ideal time to list stuff for auction. There are many dealers on the EBAY site. They certainly wouldn't reduce their listing ahead of xmas, would they?

The listing dropped from around Dec. 6th through Xmas. Only the last few days have grown back to the early Dec. levels.

>it's interesting that a week or two of negative growth in activity leads some to raise doubts about the sustainability of the growth. It seems to show just how strong the growth (and future expectations thereof) really are.

Not sure I follow your logic on this...

What about UBID, Yahoo auction, ONSL, Egghead, and a zillion other sites that pester me daily via e-mail regarding their actions. Just how much auction business is out there? Certainly not $10 billion market caps worth!
