Hi enigma,
I didn't know the "authorities feared it". Me thinks they are market makers and when necessary, during times of extreme paranoid behavior by gold bugs, "piss on the fire" by selling reserves into demand, in what appears to be a lesson that gold bugs have yet to learn (at least the ones that still have any money left to buy and hold gold with that is)-have faith in the monetary system. Is gold worth owning, hoarding, sewing in the matress etc...at these prices? Evidently it is if you are a gold bug-or are there more interesting and productive activities to pursue with capital, rather than tying it up in gold bricks???duhhh.
regards,
teevee
