How many fortunes have been made in DELL or CSCO or MSFT since 90 when the pe well exceeded 24??

Your point is well taken. Most people adhere to standard portfolio theory and own either all mutual funds or a mix of mutual funds and individual stocks. My reference was a general reference to mutual funds, the S and P 500 index in particular, but it was not clearly stated in my post. (The S and P 500 being a proxy for the market in simple terms.) So let me restate my question: Are you and or would you be buying an index fund trading in the area of 24xs price earnings with the expectation of early retirement? (Is this a biased question or what?)
