Re: Spec

Spec is a synthetic benchmark which is designed to run out of the L1 cache. System level benchmarks, which depend on the use of dram, are more realistic measures of system performance. Winstone performance is limited by memory latency. Other architectural features are almost meaningless.

K7 may well achieve SPEC scores close to those of 21264 and Merced. In a Von Neumann architecture, instructions tend to have a lot of dependencies on previous instructions. Even if you had 20 execution units available, only about two of them are of any value at any given time.

CPU architects enjoy building very complex architectures, with almost no practical justification for their efforts. The emphasis should be on clock speed and cache size, rather than instruction level parallelism.
