Re the elegant response: It used to stop them them dead! These days, I don't know. The perception of Catholicism has changed so. But it used to be a stitch to watch my father (Protestant/agnostic married to a Catholic) announce to the door-to-door types, "This is a Roman Catholic household." They would go pouf!

BTW, I have close friends of this religious persuasion. But they are sensible people who do not scamper around trying to convert except by example!
