It is not all that easy for a software company to get into the business of microprocessors. AMD can fill the void easily with Intel personnel as managers. Regarding IBM, I don't think they make microprocessors like Intel's. However they are more likely to jump in and succeed since they posses the knowhow and have the infrastructure (manufacturing and research) to do so.
