ATHM is not an OS mfger. Neither is AOL. They don't need to get into it and they most likely won't. I have been grasping for some reason to justify this purchase. AOL doesn't need programmers. You have to understand what AOL is. ISP function and content aggregation don't need intensive programming and many programmers, especially not 3000. I keep worrying about poor Keith Hankin. They'll hang him out to dry and he'll be thrown to the dogs. If you're 35 and disemployed as a programmer, you've had it. They all want young blood to suck. This purchase is inscrutable. It keeps smelling like AOL arrogance. A slap at MSFT from a company that is deep in hubris. You guys talk about Gates, why not say something about Case? This stock runup has gone to Case's head and has made him all blown up with illusions of power, so he thinks he can thwart a powerful and extremely established company like MSFT. This move reeks of pure egomaniac driven self-destruction. The trial has back fired for the gumshoes. They brought about this hocum buyout. Some sort of sneaky deal was cooked by Barfsdale and Case because the government is losing in total ignominy. If NSCP was going to lose, they thought it would be the end to NSCP, so they cut a deal. Why AOL was involved was the rancor that developed between MSFT and AOL during the last round of the trial. Case said, "they don't push ME around, I'll show Gates who can kick his ass". That arrogance is going to smash AOL. None of this justifies this purchase. I simply can't fathom it. Everyone else can, but they haven't thought it out. When you start laying out the board, you can't fit the pieces in. You'd think it was obvious, but what can AOL do with a browser software, a pile of employees, and some unclear projects? I said in another post that there is nothing in NetCenter. I get the blurb every few weeks and go through it looking for something, anything of interest. I always end up blowing it out of email generally disappointed. What I'm implying is that NSCP is one terrific short sale. It's a total bust that has been sent into the sky for imaginary reasons. MSFT and ATHM will become very close because of this fool move. Watch MSFT cut some whopper deals with ATHM and TCI. MSFT is now in the position to resume the lead by putting the bucks to make cable go, and AOL has given them a great motivation.
