The problem with analysts is that they are not an "analyst" in the true sense. Instead, they are salesmen. With the advent of electronic brokerages, analysts play the role of broker, pushing stocks that will result in a big payday for their firms. I firmly believe that the reason no significant brokerage other than Merrill has downgraded AMZN is because of the likelihood of a secondary in Q1. These brokerages want a piece of the action. Merrill would not get much because of Cohen's history in acting as a true analyst rather than a salesman.
