DownSouth:
<roll the 401(k) into a self-directed IRA>
When I became 59 1/2 I was able to roll my 401(k) over without having to leave my company. All I did was buy CSCO, INTC, etc. It was very easy to beat my 401(k). Of course we are all lucky to be in the market during the start-up of the Internet. My 401(k) was mired into large caps which was pretty nice too but not like the Internet train. Prior to 59 1/2, I often contemplated taking a penalty and moving the 401(k) over. I think this would have worked during the Internet start-up.
