fact is that Xmas never really was a holy holiday. In New England during the time of the Pilgrims there were law banning the observance of Christmas. They considered Christmas an invitation to the lazy.

It was originally instituted to convert various "heathen" religions to Christianity because most religions had some sort of winter solstice observation, and the creation of Christmas was convenient towards that end. The early church also used local deities and made saints out of them to help the conversions along (like St. Patrick in Ireland).

Christmas got its biggest boost from Chas. Dickens (my creator) who wrote his famous short story A Christmas Carol which created instant nostalgia in the English speaking world.

So, I can't help but smile when I hear stuff like "put Christ back in Christmas". Fact is, he never was ...
