Very Good Champagnes and....
If price/name is important, (as in "to impress the impressionable")

Your Budget (or more)

Salon

Taittinger Comtes de Champagne

Krug Grand Cuvee

Dom Perignon 1990

Crystal (not my favorite)
_______________________________
If only a good to fair champagne

Even Less than your stated budget:

Taittinger NV (non vintage)

Bollinger

Laurent-Perrier

There is more, but the above should work, your price range gives you more than ample choice. Do not be afraid to go to the local wino shop and ask the local Supremo for his own recommendation. They have access to lots of information, and sometimes specific houses/negociants run special deals.

On vintages: Those will be the best years, each house "declares" Vintage as they see fit, all of them are reputable in their discretion. Obviously price varies accordingly.

Never buy a Champagne more than 10 years old (general rule). Usually it takes Champagne 4 years to reach "maturity", from there, they stay in fine form for 6 more years.....

After that they begin to lose their fuzz... and get old.

Hope that helps.

The last wish of a neighbor dying of cancer was for a glass (or maybe just a sip?) of Veuve Cliquot sp? .
