Hi Jerry,

On the Hercules/Savage article; the parts you mention caught my attention also. I'm guessing that Hercules developed their own drivers for Savage independently of and/or in cooperation with S3. I'm always a bit leery of anything labeled "rumor" but the mention of Savage II isn't much different from what I've been seeing hinted at in other places. I'll call myself cautiously optimistic on that one. We'll see.

On Y2K: I agree with what you're saying but I think there are emotional issues involved as well as some remarkable advances in technology over the last few years. 1994 wasn't that long ago and the difference between what $4000 would buy then compared to what $1500 will buy today is like night and day. Granted that there are a lot of large networks that won't require more than a software patch, there's still the emotional aspect of the advantage of replacing the old everything that's "questionable" with new everything that isn't. My guess is the large majority of new PC sales over the next 2 years will come from the small businesses that have 3-5 non networked desk tops in the office. I'm also guessing that the main effect of Y2K will be that every time they go to type a letter on their old, slow machine, they'll have to change the date. The nuisance factor, plus being able to buy 3 fast, new machines for the cost of one old one should do the trick. All that over capacity on the hardware side that everyone has been crying the blues about over the last 2 years could get used up pretty quick. I may be wrong but that's where my spare money is going to be the next time there is a major sell off in the market. S3 needs to get some major OEM design wins over the next 6 months or so to be part of it. Savage is starting to look pretty good, I think it'll happen.

<Do you really mean ALL and A DIME?>

From the articles I've read, yes.

<And, are you postulating the S3 is getting nothing out of the deal, except a greaseless screwing?>

Not exactly, I think Intel will provide enough grease to last about 2 years during which time the folks at S3 will be grinning like idiots. I do think the grease will wear off after awhile and their facial expressions will change. On the bright side, S3 is probably the only graphics company receiving the benefit of lubrication.

Regards,

Don
