Steve, I well remember the introduction of the 4004 and most of those successor parts, I even have a few original CK722 by Raytheon from the 50's.(a point contact germanium transistor sold in 1955, along with the 2N107)
I did not recall Ferranti and their military model but I have sold nearly all those in my parts businesses over the years.
Never used them though and so never read the fine print.
