Perhaps if certain of your wonderful God fearing institutions of the past (slavery) didn't subjugate, mollify, humiliate and strip the dignity of it's fellow man there wouldn't be a need for assistance. Maybe your fight with the government is is that it put an end to slavery. Funny in the 60's the only republican I saw in the south was David Duke. You my friend and your holier than thou constituents caused the problem and the government tried to straighten it out for better or for worse.

Frank, are you kidding? 5 qualified minority or female democratic candidates? (sorry I didnt see for what - congress I assume, or senate). Heres 5 off the top of my head and most are local!

Willie Brown (currently mayor of SF former California legislature, he can run for anything and win)
Dianne Feinstein
Hillary Clinton
Leon Panetta (hispanic)
Loretta Sanchez

Loretta Sanchez is a bit junior but is doing well... certainly as much presence with the Dems as Mary Bono has with the republicans!

BTW of all the pundits, I think Dee Dee Myers is way up there in terms of popularity and could probably run for something and win - if she wanted to.
