I do not know where you are going with this line of reasoning but you are wrong. Selling puts helps set a price on the delivery of stock to DELL at a certain guaranteed price. It does not affect the earning of the corporation. However, it does affect the earnings per share because of the anti-dilutititive affect of the stock buy back.

So it is a good thing to do if you have confidence that your company is going continue to grow and you have the spare cash to effect the buyback

DELL is one of the few companies that makes good money on PC's.
