What does this really accomplish? Why not wait until the market opens in the morning and give everyone a chance, not just the foreign markets and those trading on instinet? How often does the market shoot up in pre-market trading?

it implies a few things. the only one i think really matters is that it affects the third-market traders and future s&p additions.

it has no bearing on aol.

i guess s&p grew wary during the post-AOL addition confusion. "is aol up 20? or is it 15? what exactly was the closing price?" they were left with mark haines and his cohorts attempting to explain it the next day.

simpler, though less dramatic, to hold off announcements a bit.
