This is the year of VCD....................................... Re-releases of classics The Malay MailTHIS is the year of the video compact disc (VCD), as the software is widely available here as never before. Although there are many local companies producing legitimate VCDs (these folks get approval and B-certificates for their videos and pay royalties to the studios which released the films), our market has been flooded with pirated copies, including that of films just released in the US. Not that the authorities have not taken stern and constant action against the pirates, but with such a huge demand, the problem will continue. And with the rise of the VCD, it looks like the start of the end of the road for videos, for superior technology will eventually replace old technology. With the promise of better visuals and audio through VCD and DVD software, along with increasingly cheaper hardware, many movie buffs are also buying VCD titles of films which they already have in video format. Anyway, this year saw many re-releases of classic, Oscar-winning films such as Gone With The Wind, The Ten Commandments, Ben-Hur, My Fair Lady and Oliver! Among the new video releases, Wag The Dog is one which has attracted much interest because its story (about a Hollywood movie producer helping an embattled US President) is somewhat a reflection of Bill Clinton's situation. Here are my Top 10 videos of 1998, in no particular order of preference: EDDIE CHUA'S Top 10 Videos of 1998 * MY FAIR LADY (re-release) * GONE WITH THE WIND (re-release) * BEN-HUR (re-release) * THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (re-release) * THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE * WAG THE DOG * THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS * THE JACKAL * THE GINGERBREAD MAN * HAMBURGER HILL (re-release)
