There are simple solutions:

1) Move to the boonies and buy land -- retire at the same time, you always wanted to.

2) Buy a bunch of guns and ammo.

3) Buy a bunch of canned and preserved food.

4) Buy a bunch of non-hybrid seeds: corn, wheat, spinach, whatever. Also buy the land to plant your crops in -- make sure there is water available.

5) buy solar panels and install them -- change your energy consumption habits to deal with low power input or spend a bunch of money.

6) Buy a wood stove and stock up on wood.

7) Draw a line in the sand or dirt or grass or whatever and post a trespassers will be shot on sight sign.

8) Sit back and look like a fool (or a Waco style wacko) when Y2K passes without significant disruptions.

What are the costs?

1. Let's say 100K, just an estimate.
2. 5K.
3. 5K
4. $100 -- land is included in #1.
5. 30-60K -- this is for low consumption of power. If you want grid-style levels, multiply by 10.
6. 2K
7. If you actually shoot someone, this could cost millions -- look at OJ's experience. If not, zippo.
8. No cost, you either look like a fool or get to live the same way as our founding fathers did while the rest of us die in masses.

Total: It looks like we are talking about $183K & change for the energy efficient option -- which must then be adjusted for the actual price of land in the area you choose.

Go for it dude, I'm going to sit in my comfy house and watch TV when Y2K comes by.
