Brian and all, blurb on current CPU prices from Sharky Extreme:sharkyextreme.com AMD K6-2 350: $105 (-$9) AMD K6-2 400: $175 (-$55) Intel P2-350: $204 (-$6) Intel P2-400: $317 (+$2) Intel P2-450: $479 (+$20) _________________________________________________ Good lord, how bout that AMD K6-2 400 price drop?? LOL, with that extra $55 I could buy a round of golf at Tustin Ranch, or maybe pickup a Frank Sinatra boxed set of CDs, or maybe even treat the Mossad to one of those "massages" he prefers at that Asian place he frequents…. That's certainly a massive drop, and puts the K6-2 400 in a more favorable light. Factor in the ease of which the K6-2 400 can be overclocked to 450MHz, and you've got the best AMD CPU that's currently available. Not many other significant drops this week as the Celerons gave away a dollar or two, while the invulnerable Xeons actually moved a point lower as well! (no doubt exciting news to those that have been waiting until just the right moment before taking the plunge on that $2,198 one meg jobber….) In a surprising move, which is probably a sign of good Christmas retail sales, the Intel P2-400 and 450 moved upward in price. This could also be Intel limiting supply on those specific CPUs, as they did on the P2-333, and 350 four weeks ago…Gotta love those fat margins folks. _________________________________________________ That's very interesting, folks. AMD's 400 MHz parts drops in price by 24%, while Intel's 400 and 450 MHz parts hold their prices pretty well. I'm sure we'll have different explanations from both sides of the war-torn fence. My take? AMD is starting to crank out more of those 400 MHz parts, more than what's comfortable for Intel. But the demand for the K6-2 400 isn't keeping up, while Intel is still sold out of Pentium II 400 and 450 MHz parts. Maybe Anand's K6-3 article hurt demand for the K6-2 400, as AMD's smaller customers (i.e. the smaller shops, not Compaq or IBM) are now putting off K6-2 orders in anticipation of Sharptooth.
