AMERICA ONLINE INC - which had 1 mln subscribers in 1994 - had 15 mln
clicking and browsing this Christmas, the company said Wednesday. About 1 mln
have joined since November 12, when it surpassed the 14 mln mark, the company
said. Christmas day brought in more new customers than ever before in the
company's history, it said. In August 1994, AOL had more than 1 mln members.
In three years' time, 9 mln members joined. The surge continued well into 1998,
with 14 mln subscribers using AOL as of November this year. Wall Street
attributes the subscriber growth to a surge in PC sales over the holiday season and
the publicity surrounding the movie ''You've Got Mail,'' which according to one
analyst is ''a billboard for AOL.'' (Reuters)
