No I wouldnt vote for Hillary for the reasons you state. I am one of the huge class of voters that is fiscally conservative and socially liberal. My parents were Goldwater supporters in Ca (and also Reagan supporters) and if Goldwater was around today Id vote for him - Dont know about Reagan. I dont believe in a complete free market system since I think the underrepresented groups can get completely screwed and somebody has to regulate that.. but I am no fan of social programs either.

What I think you fail to recognize is that since the early 90s the republicans have shifted from their roots of less government and embraced an idealogical platform almost exclusively - I think this started with Quayles "Family values" stuff. Meanwhile, the Dems have shifted to the right a little in terms of fiscal matters. That leaves the new republicans of today about equal to the extreme republican faction that supported Buchanan the last time he ran. If the republincans would stop this pointless moralizing which includes abortion, prayer in school, etc. and start trying to fix things for a change they would get their support back. They arent doing that, instead they are spending all this time on a ludicrous attack on the presidents sex life which is another limb of the whole family values blather.

I used to be really troubled by this trend because I like having all the choices in my life that are available today that would have never been options in the 50s world the republicans try to promote. But then, watching them beat this impeachment horse to death tells me they are goners in 2000 and who knows how long it will take them to recover.
